Non-Stationary Contaminant Plumes in the Advective-Diffusive Regime

چکیده

Porous media with low/moderate regional velocities can exhibit a complex dynamic of contamination plumes, in which advection and molecular diffusion are comparable. In this work, we present two-dimensional scenario constant concentration source impermeable upper lower boundaries. order to characterise the plume patterns, detailed discriminated dimensionless technique is used obtain groups that govern problem: an aspect ratio domain including characteristic lengths, two others relating time horizontal length spread contamination. The monomials related each other enable their dependences be translated into set new universal abacuses. Extensive numerical simulations were carried out check plot these type curves. abacuses provide tool directly manage process, covering wide spectrum possible real cases. Among applications interest, they predict maximum transversal extensions time-spatial iso-concentration patterns according physical parameters problem.

Reaction front formation in contaminant plumes.

The formation of successive fronts in contaminated groundwater plumes by subsoil bacterial action is a commonly accepted feature of their propagation, but it is not obviously clear from a mathematical standpoint quite how such fronts are formed or propagate. In this paper we show that these can be explained by combining classical reaction-diffusion theory involving just two reactants (oxidant a...

Three-Dimensional Characterization of Contaminant Plumes

Before remediating a site with contaminated soil or groundwater, the contaminant plume must first be characterized. This involves sampling the contaminant concentration at a set of locations in and around the contaminated area. To present the measured concentrations in a meaningful form, the concentrations are typically interpolated to the nodes of a three-dimensional grid and the plume is visu...

Pattern formation in diffusive-advective coupled map lattices.

We investigate pattern formation and evolution in coupled map lattices when advection is incorporated, in addition to the usual diffusive term. All patterns may be suitably grouped into five classes: three periodic, supporting static patterns and traveling waves, and two nonperiodic. Relative frequencies are determined as a function of all model parameters: diffusion, advection, local nonlinear...

Revisiting stabilized finite element methods for the advective–diffusive equation

We give a brief overview of stabilized finite element methods and illustrate the developments applied to the advection–diffusion equation. This article presents a concise perspective of the developments emanated from the works started in the 1980s through today. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Advective-diffusive mass flux and implications for stratosphere- troposphere exchange

[1] We show that the flux of mass crossing in one direction (the ‘‘gross’’ flux) through any specified surface S that divides anadvective-diffusive flow in a closed domain is infinite. That is, the flux, F (t), through S of the fluid mass that spent at least time t on one side of S diverges like t 1/2 as t ! 0, in the continuum limit. The gross flux is completely dominated by fluid elements res...
